Finding Fiesta in the Little Moments

A personal reflection on celebrating San Antonio’s Fiesta in small, meaningful ways after sickness changed our plans — and why even a preschool parade can hold the true heart of celebration.

This year, we were excited to finally experience San Antonio’s vibrant Fiesta together — the parades, the colors, the music. We had plans and the energy ready to soak it all in.

But just as Fiesta was kicking off this past week, sickness found its way into our home. Instead of dancing in the streets, we found ourselves curled up on the couch, watching Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood, resting and healing. It was a disappointing pause, especially after looking forward to finally experiencing “Fiesta!” firsthand.

Thankfully, our son is feeling much better — just in time to join his preschool’s mini-Fiesta parade! Today, he’ll proudly march around, wearing the colorful hat we decorated together (with him excitedly directing what elements he wanted on it). *See his decorated hat in the picture below.* We’ll be there, smiling and cheering him on, soaking in every moment.

It’s easy to think Fiesta is all about the big parades, crowds, and parties — with all the amazing and unique food. But this year showed me something different. Sometimes, the heart of celebration beats strongest in the small, everyday moments — a homemade hat, a short parade of preschoolers, and the simple joy of being well enough to show up.

Fiesta will always be a part of San Antonio’s story — and now, it’s part of ours too. Even if it didn’t look quite like we first imagined, this year’s Fiesta feels simpler, sweeter, and just right for where we are.

If you’re curious about what Fiesta is all about — why it’s a 10-day celebration and the history behind this colorful tradition that started back in 1891 — KSAT News created a wonderful background video that helped me better understand the spirit of San Antonio’s biggest celebration.

Next year, I hope we’ll get to partake in NIOSA — a nighttime foodie fest located in the beautiful La Villita district — and soak up even more of what makes Fiesta so special.

Wherever you are, I hope you’re finding your own small celebrations to enjoy this Spring season too.
