The Guilt of Resting: A Sick Mother’s Quiet Reflection

I’m writing this from bed. Tuesday morning, I found out the excruciating pressure and pain in my right ear was a raging ear infection. I hadn’t slept at all Monday night because the pain was a 10 out of 10—completely unmanageable. The discomfort started Monday evening, radiating through my jaw and the entire right side of my face. No painkiller brought relief. It came on fast, and I honestly couldn’t make sense of how or why.

The following day, I ran a fever, felt nauseous from the pain, and couldn’t hear out of my right ear (and still can’t—it’s all muffled, like I’m underwater). My primary care provider told me to rest as much as possible while taking oral antibiotics and using steroid ear drops.

This kind of sudden illness isn’t new in our household. It usually starts when someone brings home a mild bug that clears quickly, but then it lingers with the adults—leaving us down for the count for weeks. The need for rest, while essential, often shifts a heavy load onto one parent, especially when there’s no extended family nearby to lean on. Being “out of commission” adds a layer of emotional weight, including guilt, even when I know rest is necessary.

Even with my background in nursing, I still find myself surprised by how much my body endures without clear warning signs. This year alone, I’ve already had multiple colds, sinus infections, the flu, and now this ear infection. And yes, I’m fully vaccinated.

So, what’s behind all this? Seasonal allergens. Viruses. Stress. Fatigue. A tired, overworked immune system worn thin by life’s constant demands. Living in survival mode for too long takes its toll.

What do I need now? Rest. Real, deep rest. Quality sleep. Hydration. And perhaps most importantly—permission to let go of the guilt that comes with resting.

If you’re a parent navigating illness while trying to keep everything afloat, I see you. You’re not alone. We’re doing the best we can—with the bodies and circumstances we have.

Hang in there.
